This is a pretty good book from start to finish which covers the David’s band ‘Couch Potatoes’ at the back end of the 80’s. They were a decent enough band. Catchy pop-punk / melodic hardcore. Saw ‘Couch Potatoes’ play a couple of time. Once with Alice Donut if memory serves correct.
History lesson over and onto the book!
The book starts off from the very beginning with some mad stories about neighbours and the music being too loud! I’ve heard that a few times myself over the years hence why I choose to live next to people who’s hearing is poor!
‘A Hardcore Heart’ reads more like a tour diary which makes it all the more fun to read and tthe band seems to through some ups an downs. It’s an easy read in which will see you not wanting to put the book once you pick it up!
‘Couch Potatoes’ have played with lots off bands from Alice Donut’ to Leatherface to Green Day to Joyce McKinney Experience to Majority Of One, NOFX and Hotwater Music to name but a few. Some mad stories regards these gigs too!
The only criticsm would be featuring Kevin ‘Benny’ Davies a neo-nazi from Powys who ran Dragnet . Obviously the author and the rest of the band were a little naive back then as Davies pushed bands like Skrewdriver etc. He openly did that which surprised many as the Blood and Honour scene operated under most peoples radar!
If you’re a fan of 80’s HC / Punk then you’ll enjoy this book as it captures the 90’s scene pretty well! The ups and downs were a part of that time. Every DIY band had them but at least the author makes light of those situations rather than dwelling on. That’s what makes this book so good as David keeps things flowing so you wont lose interest! 8/10
