I almost missed this gig thanks to an incompetent train service and only made the show as I knew a doorman was working at a bar in town so I grabbed a lift with him. On arrival at the Theatre Severn I was impressed by both the lay out and the polite staff. Why I hadn’t been to see live bands at the theatre before has been a mistake!

Once inside the room where the gig was taking place I caught a catchy ska-punk band called The Social Ignition who blew me away. They’re a great band visually, musically and lyrically. How these have been off my radar has is a mystery but they are a band that are worth checking out. Their 30 minute set really impressed both myself and others in the room and I wish they had played for much longer. There’s always next time!

While we were waiting for Macka B I had a walk around the venue and liked what I saw. I then headed to the bar for a pint of Stowford Press. I was amazed that I wasn’t charged the earth either! I came away with change from a £5 note. In Birmingham I wouldn’t have got a pint for less than a fiver!

Well it was time for Macka B to hit the stage and from the moment he walked on stage he and his band delivered in style. Throughout the show Macka B communicated with the crowd with songs about veganism, gang culture, healthy eating and his love for reggae. Songs such as ‘Wha Me Eat?’, ‘Respect The Woman’, ‘Too Much Chicken’ and ‘Cucumber’ amongst others were welcomed by the crowd.

Macka B really is a positive person and his outlook on life is amazing. He talked about gang culture and how it’s madness. He talks about packing a 45 then pulls out a 7″ single to the crowd and told them it’ll be the only 45 he packs. What a brilliant method of getting through to people.

There was a mixed audience from the very young to oldies like myself who were all singing along and getting into the spirit of things. This is how shows should be with lots of dancing, singing and smiles. All positive attitudes.

On top of all that the sound was amazing. It’s been a long while since I heard a great sound like that in a venue. Well done the sound engineer.

The last time I saw Macka B play was like 20 years ago if not longer and it was such a pleasure to see this man in action once again. If you’ve not seen this man live yet make sure you do. It’s reggae / roots at kits very best! He’s one of the most positive artists around and if more people listened to the words of Macka B this would be such a richer society to live in!

Thanks to Craig Reeves and Theatre Severn for sorting this event out for me.
